Richard H. “Chief” Dunlap, age 82, died Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at the Paris Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.

Born September 14, 1934 in Springville, TN, he was the son of the late Herbert Dunlap and the late Hazel Dortch Dunlap.

Richard began working for the City of Paris Police department in 1964. In 1974 he took the office of Police Chief, a position he held until his retirement in 1994 .Dunlap was a part of the group that helped to start the DARE Program in Paris and Henry County.  He also served in the United States Air Force.

Chief is survived by his former wife Joye Cole of Paris, two daughters: Charla Dunlap of Arlington, TN and Cheryl Davis Dodd of Claremore OK; a brother: William C. “Bill” (Linda) Dunlap of Paris; grandchildren: Jason Richard Davis, Jared Davis, Kasey Davis Maze, Jeff Snider and Jessie Snider Frazier.

Additional survivors include 7 great grandchildren; Nieces: Kathy Dunlap Brewer Diana Dunlap Williams, Donna Dunlap Sulcer and Carrie Dunlap Reed; and Nephews: Robert “Bubba” Dunlap, William “BJ” Dunlap and Daniel Dunlap.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a son Timothy Rex Davis, a brother Robert “Buddy” Dunlap, a granddaughter Angie Davis, a nephew Richard “Box” Dunlap, step father Ezell Dunlap and step mother Cleo Bomar Dunlap.

The funeral service will be held Friday, May 26, 2017, at 2PM in LeDon Chapel of Ridgeway Funeral Home, with Dale Gallimore and Paris Police Chief Charles Elizondo officiating.  Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4 until 7pm and continue on Friday after 11 am. Burial will follow in the Poplar Grove Cemetery.

Pallbearers for the service are Ean Reed, Charles "Chuck" Elizondo, Clyde Sulcer, Tony Elkins, Tony Hutcherson and John Brewer.  Honorary Pallbearers will be current and retired officers of the Paris Police Department.
