Retired U.S. Coast Guard warrant officer and engineer Leonard “Matt” Mathews, 81, of Springville died Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at his residence.
His wife, Loretta Williams Mathews, survives. They were married in 1951.
A graveside service is planned at 2 p.m. Sunday in Buck Williams Cemetery at Springville. Danny Williams will officiate.
Chosen as pallbearers are Earl, Danny, Jerry and Terry Williams, Andrew Mathews and Jerry McNutt.
Visitation will be from noon-1:30 p.m. Sunday at Ridgeway Funeral Home.
Born Dec. 23, 1932, in Bradenton, Fla., he was a son of the late Drexal Mathews and Geneieve Young Mathews Barker Hamilton.
Mathews was a member of Point Pleasant Baptist Church.
Besides his wife, he leaves two sons: Tony (Vickie) Mathews of Albuquerque, N.M., and Kenneth (Cindy) Mathews of Crossville; a brother: Wayne (Gloria) Mathews of Cartersville, Ga.; seven grandchildren: Ashley Mathews Claybourne, Erin Mathews, Andrew Mathews, Amber Mathews Carpenter, Anthony Mathews Jr., Thomas Mathews and Harley Mathews; and three great-grandchildren.
