Horace Morton, Jr., age 95 of Cottage Grove, TN, died Wednesday, December 25, 2019, at Plumley Rehabilitation Center in Paris, TN.
He attended Elizabeth Elementary School and graduated in 1942 from Hamlett-Robertson High School in Crockett Mills, TN. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII where he achieved Signalman 3rd class on the U.S.S. LCS95 where he participated in Pacific Theater, Occupation of Tokyo, Japan, and was honorably discharged.
Horace farmed for many years in the Crockett County community of Bethesda near Friendship, TN. After moving to the Henry County area, he continued operating his farm in Palmersville, TN, while working for the Henry County School system at Cottage Grove School until his retirement in 2002. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.
Horace was born September 24, 1924, in the Elizabeth Community near Friendship, TN, to the late Horace Greeley Morton and the late Jennie Maud Osborn Morton.
He was married August 12, 1953, to Jewell Maxine Hutchison Morton, who survives, of Cottage Grove, TN.
Along with his wife, he is also survived by one daughter, DebraAnn (Garry) Grimes of Paris, TN; three sons, James R. Morton of Cottage Grove, TN, Mark A. (Christy) Morton of Palmersville, TN, and John O. (Kim) Morton of Paris, TN; one daughter-in-law, Lynn (Bob) Williams; one sister, Louise Morton Via of Bells, TN; 11 grandchildren, Meredith (William) Stallings, Paige (Lee) Wood, Blaire (James) DiMarco, Andy (Lindsey) Morton, Justin (Brittany) Morton, Blake Morton, Charlie Morton, Allyson Morton, Shelby Morton, Cody Morton, and Libby Morton; and nine great grandchildren, Grant Stallings, Emma Stallings, Bo Morton Wood, Max Wood, Cameron Morton, Neely Morton, Wesley Morton, Chandler Rimmer, and Chloe Rimmer.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one son, Richard K. Morton; one sister, Ailene Morton Thompson; and three brothers, Forrest Morton, Clarence Morton, and Howard Morton.
Arrangements are being handled by Ridgeway Funeral Home, 201 Dunlap Street, Paris, TN. Visitation will be Saturday, December 28, 2019, from 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Ridgeway Funeral Home. Visitation will continue Sunday, December 29, 2019, from 12:00 pm – 3:00 pm at Bethesda Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 9713 Hwy 188, Friendship, TN 38034. The funeral service will be Sunday, December 29, 2019, at 3:00 p.m. at Bethesda Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Burial will be in Bethesda Cemetery in Friendship, TN.
