E. Ray Stockdale

E. Ray Stockdale of Henry County died July 14, 2017 at his residence.  Visitation will be at 1:00 on Tuesday, July 18, 2017, followed by a memorial service at 2:00 at Ridgeway Funeral Home with Gary Collier officiating.

He was born October 19, 1934 in Benton County to the late James E. and Nona Robbins Stockdale.  His wife of 62 years, Shirley Ann Davis Stockdale survives.

He received his early education in Henry County and graduated from Grove High School in 1952 and Memphis State University in 1961 with a degree in accounting.  He was a proud American who served three years on active duty and eight years in the reserves of the US Naval Air Force.

Stockdale joined Peat Marwick & Mitchell (now KPMG) as a junior accountant in 1961.  He was admitted as Partner in the firm after 10 years.  During his career he was a member of the American Institute of CPAs, Tennessee Society of CPAs, and was a past president of the Memphis Chapter of CPAs and served on the Tennessee State Council.  He also taught accounting and taxation at The University of Tennessee.

He was an Episcopalian and a volunteer for the Memphis Chamber of Commerce and United Way.

Stockdale retired in 1985 and turned his focus to his beloved wife and family.  Being an only child, he cared for his elderly parents.  He also enjoyed playing golf and traveling with Shirley and their friends.

He is also survived by a son, Scott (Debbie) Stockdale of Murfreesboro; a daughter, Penny (Larry) Ingle of Paris and four grandchildren:  Wyatt (Jessica) Stockdale of Murfreesboro; Mitch (Britton) Stockdale of Jackson; and Haleigh Savage of Paris and Jacob Savage, who is currently enlisted with the United States Marine Corp at Parris Island, South Carolina.
