Dr. P J Scott, age 79 of Paris, TN, died Friday, December 6, 2019 at Saint Thomas West Hospital in Nashville, TN.
P J graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin with a Bachelor’s Degree in History and a Master’s Degree in Education. He received a Master of Divinity from Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary in Memphis, TN and a Doctor of Ministry from Luther-Rice Seminary. He served in the US Navy from 1961-1968 and was a Baptist Minister for over 50 years. He pastored Jolley Springs Baptist Church in Weakley County Tennessee from 1969-1975 and First Baptist Church Olive Branch Mississippi from 1975-2005. He then served as a transitional Pastor at FBC Ripley, MS, FBC Coldwater, MS, FBC Batesville, MS, East Baptist Church in Booneville, MS, New Harmony Baptist Church in Paris, TN, FBC Gleason, TN, and was presently serving at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Greenfield, TN. P J enjoyed spending time with his grandsons, preaching, reading, history, watching westerns, UT football, and playing the guitar and singing at nursing homes.
He was born November 11, 1940 in New Albany, MS to the late Patrick Henry Scott and the late Janie Pearl Speck Scott.
P J was married on December 11, 1961 to Betty Frances Petty Scott who survives of Paris, TN. He is also survived by his daughter, Dr. Norma Scott (Carlton) Gerrell of Paris, TN; two grandsons, Trey (Emily) Gerrell of Memphis, TN, and Scott Gerrell of Paris, TN.
Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by one brother, Henry Merl Scott.
Arrangements are being handled by Ridgeway Funeral Home, 201 Dunlap St, Paris, TN. Visitation will be Saturday, December 7, 2019 from 4 - 7 pm at Ridgeway Funeral Home and continue on Sunday, December 8, 2019 from 2 - 3 pm at Tennessee Valley Community Church in Paris, TN with the funeral service at 3:00 pm Sunday, December 8, 2019 at Tennessee Valley Community Church, 2500 E. Wood St, Paris, TN 38242. Officiating the service will be Carlton Gerrell, James Hazelwood, and Wayne Perkins.
The graveside service and burial will be Monday, December 9, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Glenfield Memorial Park in New Albany, MS.
A memorial service will be planned at a later date at First Baptist Church in Olive Branch, MS.
