Arthur Hugh “Art” Still, Sr., age 88 of Paris, TN, died Monday, September 2, 2024, at Henry County Medical Center.
He retired after 20 years from the U.S. Navy as a machinist mate. After his retirement, he worked for Civil Service as U.S. Base Security. Art loved visiting his grandchildren and telling “sea stories.” He enjoyed fishing and watching NASCAR on TV. He was very sociable, enjoyed people, and never met a stranger.
Art was born March 31, 1936, in Baltimore, MD, to the late Lonell “Dewey” Still, Sr., and the late Katie Leynes Still.
He was married December 11, 1971, to Doris Hatfield Still, who preceded him in death on March 15, 2020.
He is survived by eight children, Sonja (Carter) Byrd of Paris, TN, Tammy (Jeff) Bush of Elizabeth City, NC, Dana Goate of Newbern, NC, Cindy (Carroll) Pittman of Stafford, VA, Calvin (Pam) Newby of Virginia Beach, VA, Dwayne Stretch of Jackson, NC, Bobby Wilbanks of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Arthur H. Still, Jr., of Winston, NC; one brother, L D Still, Jr., of Wilmington, NC; 21 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and four great-great grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by one son, Ty Wilbanks; and one sister, Francis Still.
Arrangements will be handled by Ridgeway Funeral Home, 201 Dunlap St., Paris, TN, 38242. The body is to be cremated. A chapel side memorial service will be held Friday, September 20, 2024, at 1:30 pm at the Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery at Parkers Crossroads, 693 Wildersville Road, Wildersville, TN 38388.
Burial of cremains will follow the service at the Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery at Parkers Crossroads.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
